Israel Evacuates Greece Embassy Due to Escalating Anti-Israel Protests

(MENAFN) Amid escalating anti-Israel demonstrations in Greece, Israel evacuated its embassy personnel from Athens on Tuesday, according to local media reports.

This action followed a surge of protests condemning Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, as detailed by an Israeli newspaper.

The outlet also noted plans by Greek leftist groups for a “March to Gaza” scheduled for August 10, although specific details about the event remain undisclosed.

“The Greek people will not remain silent in the face of the genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza with the support and complicity of the West and the Greek government,” the organizing movement declared, as cited by the newspaper.

Neither Israeli nor Greek officials have publicly confirmed the evacuation or addressed the current situation of embassy staff.

Earlier in the day, the Greek Communist Party (KKE) sharply criticized Israeli Ambassador Noam Katz for his condemnation of pro-Palestinian graffiti found in Athens.

“The audacity of the Israeli Ambassador in Athens for his vile statements stems not only from the fact that he represents a murderous state, but also from the fact that the Greek government has evolved into a key advocate for Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people, under the pretext of a strategic alliance with it,” the KKE stated.

Global outrage continues to swell in response to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which many have labeled genocidal.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s military operations have intensified without heeding international demands for a ceasefire, resulting in over 61,000 Palestinian deaths, nearly half of whom are women and children.

The offensive has left Gaza devastated, pushing the territory toward catastrophic famine conditions.

In November of last year, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the Gaza war.

Additionally, Israel is currently facing a genocide lawsuit at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the Gaza Strip.
