Greece Continues to Battle Wildfires

(MENAFN) Wildfires continue to devastate parts of Greece, including the islands of Chios and Zakynthos, the western port city of Patras, and the northwestern region of Preveza, as flames escalate into the early hours of Wednesday.

A fire in the Chalandra forest of Chios is rapidly spreading, with flames now threatening the villages of Potamia and Pispilounda. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of Volissos, as reported by a public broadcaster. Despite the heroic efforts of firefighting teams, the blaze remains largely uncontrollable due to fierce northerly winds that are also complicating firefighting efforts elsewhere in the country, the broadcaster added.

Meanwhile, a separate fire broke out early Wednesday in the agricultural forest region between Lithakia, Agala, and Kiliomenos on Zakynthos. The flames are particularly intense near the settlements of Agala and Keri, prompting evacuations in these areas. Authorities also evacuated all hotels in the popular tourist zone as the fire continues to spread, according to the broadcaster.

In Preveza, a wildfire that ignited in the Gymnotopos forest is advancing quickly toward the towns of Thesprotiko and Philippiada. The broadcaster reported that at least two medical facilities were evacuated, along with multiple settlements.

In Patras, a fire originating in the industrial zone of Achaia is moving rapidly toward surrounding residential areas. As a result, authorities have launched a significant evacuation operation, including evacuations from several villages and the Kato Achaia Hospital.
